Enrichment Through Art and Play!

Emergent Curriculum and Play-Based Learning

“Child Development - particularly from birth to five years - is a foundation for a prosperous and sustainable society.” -Center on the Developing Child, Harvard University

Children have many unique ways of learning. At Honeybee, we aspire to use a myriad of educational tools to support the five main areas of development- cognitive, social and emotional, speech and language, fine motor, and gross motor. Within those areas, we flow with children to scaffold to their individual needs, grounded in compassion and community.

Honeybee Preschool is a play-based, emergent curriculum program. Deep, authentic learning happens through both group and individual play. While playing, children take on an active role in the learning environment, gain confidence, and draw personal connections to their education.

What is Emergent Curriculum? When we closely observe children’s wonderings and interests, we can deepen and support their learning by structuring curriculum around them. For years I have personally witnessed the positive influence and joyful learning that comes from student derived curriculum. We as educators meet their questions with answers, but also more questions, encouraging learning as a community. We provide a safe, accepting environment for multi-faceted learning that includes: music, art, science, movement, environmental exploration, culinary arts, literacy, and numeracy that is fundamental to a child's development.
